Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many artists have found themselves without work, teaching, technical support and gallery work. Exhibitions and sales have disappeared. In an attempt to help alleviate some of this stress artist Matthew Burrows has instigated the ARTIST SUPPORT PLEDGE #artistsupportpledge
The concept is a simple one. Artists post images of their work, on Instagram what they are willing to sell for no more than £200 each (not including shipping). Anyone can buy the work. Every time an artist reaches £1000 of sales, they pledge to spend £200 on another artist/s work. This spirit of mutual support and generosity is enabling artists to maintain a vital income stream at a time when most sales channels have disappeared overnight.
To make a pledge, post your work with the #artistsupportpledge and follow the # to see everyone else’s work. Keep updated on new opportunities and announcements @artistsupportpledge Repost and tell your friends, colleagues and collectors. Let generosity be infectious.

One of the many things I enjoy about Manchester is that it is great at embracing its diverse population and this weekend there are celebrations for Chinese New Year 2020. I will enjoy the buzz in China Town on Sunday, and make the most of the delicious food on offer, but I’m not so keen on big crowds, so my top tip for watching the amazing dragon dance without the melee, is to drop into Manchester Art Gallery for the best view on Princess Street.
2020 is the Chinese zodiac Year of the Rat
What Chinese zodiac sign are YOU?

If you are curious as to how to learn about Patchwork & Quilting, I am pleased to be running two can do taster Patchwork & Quilting workshops. On Sunday 16th February I will be teaching P&Q from James Donalds PickOne’s light and airy basement weave studio within the Coburg House Art Studios (www.coburghouse.co.uk/) in Edinburgh. On Saturday 7th March my P&Q workshop will be at Technically Brilliant’s light and airy gallery in Golden Square shopping centre in Warrington.
These Patchwork & Quilting taster workshop will be held from 10-4pm, priced £65. Click to book.
In this taster Patchwork & Quilting workshop Lisa Watson (that’s me!) will introduce you to hand stitched patchwork & quilting techniques and throughout the day talk through how you can develop your P&Q further at home, by hand, or on a sewing machine.
Takeaways from this days workshop are a hand-stitched patchwork pin cushion and a suffolk puff brooch. Lots of useful hand outs are provided, as well as all the materials. However, if you are a sewer, please do bring your sewing kit and fabrics with you to use for a truly personalised approach.
Bring a packed lunch for an half an hour break at midday. Tea and coffee and cake will be provided throughout the day.
Only 8 people max for these workshop, so book your place early.
